Back in the saddle again

Category Personal

I've been whining a bit lately about what's going on career-wise. I've pretty much decided on what I'm going to do.

Unless I get a really good offer, I'm going to stay on with my current employer. Even though the pay sucks and we are moving platforms, I really do enjoy working there, I like my co-workers, and as I've said before, job security is pretty much a given.

So where does that leave Domino?

I'm going to continue doing Domino stuff, just not as my full-time focus. I've said it before and I'll say it again, I LOVE Notes/Domino. So I'm going to work on building toolset type products (some will be available for free, some will be available for purcha$e). I'm going to try to do stuff for OpenNTF. I may offer myself as a cook on some projects, or I might even submit something cool as a Master Chef. By the way, if you haven't yet checked out OpenNTF, go do it now, I can wait.

I'm definitely going to do a bunch more technical writing (blogs / articles), and I may even do a presentation / class or two. There is actually a reason why am I going to put myself through all this extra work, even though my current employer is dumping Lotus like a bad habit. I say Lotus intentionally, they are not just getting rid of Notes/Domino, but they are also dumping SameTime (or whatever the hell it is called now), Live Virtual Classroom, and LearningSpace. The reason is that I truly believe in the platform, and I really enjoy working with Notes/Domino. So I'll keep working on my own, building things, keeping my skills sharp, doing contract work (hint there, if you need some contract / consulting done, don't be afraid to give me a ring), etc.

Besides, things in this business seem to go in cycles, and I'm pretty sure that after a while (might take an administration change), the "powers that be" might just decide that this was a boneheaded decision, and switch back to Domino. A little gossip I found out at Lotusphere and have since verified: they used to be a MS-Exchange shop, and migrated to Lotus Notes/Domino back around 1995 - 1996. It turns out that the folks who helped them do the original migration are friends (former co-workers) of mine. Small world, eh?
